💡 Exam Advice
Theory Test Tips
Everything you need to know for the day of your DVSA theory test.
Before the Test
- Bring your valid UK photocard driving licence — you cannot sit the test without it
- Arrive at least 15 minutes early to allow for check-in
- Get a good night's sleep — fatigue affects concentration
- Eat a light meal beforehand — don't sit the test hungry
- Know the test centre address and how to get there
- You are not allowed to bring your phone into the test room
During the Multiple Choice
- You have 57 minutes for 50 questions — that's over a minute per question
- Read every question carefully — watch for words like "NOT" or "EXCEPT"
- If unsure, flag the question and come back to it
- Don't spend more than 2 minutes on any one question
- Your first instinct is often correct — don't second-guess yourself
- Review all flagged questions before submitting
During the Hazard Perception
- Click as soon as you see a hazard developing — not when it's fully developed
- One click per hazard is enough — clicking repeatedly may score you zero
- There is one clip with two developing hazards — watch carefully
- You cannot pause, rewind, or skip clips
- There is a short break between the multiple choice and hazard perception
- The pass mark for hazard perception is 44 out of 75
Pass Marks
- Multiple choice: 43 out of 50 (86%)
- Hazard perception: 44 out of 75
- You must pass both parts to pass the theory test
- If you fail one part, you must retake the whole test
- You must wait at least 3 working days before retaking
Common Mistakes
- Not reading the full question before answering
- Forgetting that speed limits are maximum speeds, not targets
- Confusing "give way" with "stop" signs
- Misunderstanding stopping distances — they double in wet conditions
- Clicking too early or too late on hazard perception
- Not practising hazard perception enough before the test
