You've cleared the first hurdle
Well done — the theory test trips up plenty of people. Next stop: the practical test. Here's exactly what that involves.
Book your practical test
You can book the moment you've passed theory — you'll need your theory test pass number and driving licence number. Waiting times vary by test centre, so booking early matters.
Book on gov.uk →Find an instructor
An approved driving instructor (ADI) will get you road-ready and can advise on realistic timing for your test date based on your progress.
See our partner instructors →"Show Me, Tell Me" questions
The practical test includes vehicle safety questions — e.g. "show me how you'd check the brake lights work." Every candidate is asked one of each type.
Keep your hazard perception sharp
The instincts you built here — spotting developing hazards early — are exactly what your examiner is watching for on the day. Come back for a refresher clip any time before your test.
Practise hazard perception →Bring on the day
- Both parts of your driving licence (photocard and paper counterpart, if issued before 2015)
- Your theory test pass certificate/number
- A car displaying L-plates (or D-plates in Wales), insured for your test
- Your instructor or another qualified driver, if the car is not your own
Forgetting your licence is the single most common reason for a cancelled test — the DVSA will not let you sit it without one.
Good luck out there — you've got this. 🍀
