The hazard perception test is the second part of the UK theory test. You watch 14 video clips of everyday road scenes and click when you see a hazard developing. There are 15 hazards to find (one clip has two), each worth up to 5 points, and you need 44 out of 75 to pass.

How the scoring works

  • The earlier you click once a hazard starts to develop, the higher your score – from 5 points down to 1.
  • You will not lose points for clicking at the wrong time, but you need to click within the scoring window to get any points.
  • Clicking constantly or in a pattern scores zero for that clip.
  • You cannot go back or change your answers – each clip plays only once.

What counts as a “developing hazard”?

Something that would make you take action – slow down, stop or change direction. A parked car is a potential hazard; a parked car that starts to pull out in front of you is a developing hazard.

You must pass both parts

The theory test has two parts: 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes (pass mark 43) and the hazard perception clips. You must pass both parts at the same sitting – if you fail one, you retake the whole test.

The best way to improve is practice with instant scoring. Try our hazard perception practice – 3 clips are free, with 36 clips in the full course. More details: GOV.UK hazard perception test.
