What documents do I need to take to my theory test?
TheoryPrac is a UK driving theory test practice site: 750+ DVSA-licensed questions with explanations, timed mock exams and 36 hazard perception clips, for car, motorcycle, LGV and ADI. Free to start. See all features
Take your UK photocard provisional driving licence to your theory test. It is the main document the test centre checks. If you do not have the right ID, your test will not go ahead and you will usually lose your test fee – so check it before you leave home.
Checklist for test day
- Photocard provisional licence – make sure the photo still looks like you and the licence has not expired.
- Glasses or contact lenses if you need them for reading a screen.
- Arrive a little early. Late arrivals may not be allowed to sit the test.
- You will be asked to put your phone, bag and coat in a locker – you cannot take them into the test room.
What if I don’t have a photocard licence?
Rules for other forms of ID can change, so check the latest guidance on GOV.UK: what to take to your theory test well before your test date. If your name or address has changed, update your licence with the DVLA first.
Need extra help on the day?
If you have a reading difficulty, a disability or a health condition, you can ask for support such as extra time when you book. Tell the DVSA when you book rather than on the day.
Once your documents are sorted, make sure you are ready for the test itself: try our 50-question mock test and hazard perception practice.
